We’re looking for an experienced PHP developer to join our highly effective team. We’re problem solvers, with clients depending on us – some of them for over a decade – to help them with great ideas and solutions to their technical challenges. We’ve got clients all over the world, across a lot of sectors, meaning every day is different. Key sectors for us are membership organisations, subscription / publishing sites and education. We look after websites that are visited by thousands – and in some cases – millions of people a day, so a good understanding of AWS is valuable.

Whilst we’ve historically worked from our offices in Winscombe, N Somerset (BS25) full time our team have adapted superbly to working remotely during the Pandemic meaning we’re open to this being a largely remote role, ideally with someone who’s able to visit the office maybe once or twice a week (and for a final stage interview).

Not only will the ideal candidate be a great coder, they’ll be a brilliant communicator with excellent written English. This is a client facing role, so you’ll be speaking to clients via email on a daily basis, and quite often via Zoom or old fashioned telephone. The ability to explain things clearly and concisely and keep communication channels open with clients at all times is vital to a great working relationship, and it’s a big part of why our clients love working with us. That, combined with the fact we can always deliver whatever they need, on time and to budget.

Tech wise, we typically build on a LAMP stack so you’ll need to be proficient in some or all of the following:

– PHP
– Apache
– JavaScript
– Laravel
– Vue.js
– CodeIgniter (for legacy systems)
– Sass
– AWS
– Webservices and APIs
– JQuery
– React JS
– GIT
– Hybrid app development

An eye for design and PhotoShop skills would be a great plus. You’ll also be wireframing systems and writing technical plans for clients to sign off.

Our online portfolio is a little out of date to be honest – busy busy busy – but get in touch if you’d like to hear more about the sort of clients we’re working with at the moment.

We need someone with a super keen eye for detail. To work here you need to be conscientious with a real desire to deliver a good service, whilst managing deadlines. Usually you’ll be working as part of a team but when needed you need to be able to take a project, make it your own, and deliver it to a very high standard.

We like all our code to be tidy and organised, and delivered with a considered yet pragmatic approach.

Finally, although it goes without saying really, a strong interest in the web is vital – we’re a team who are passionate about the Internet and all that it offers society. You’ll need to fully engage in projects and be comfortable suggesting solutions and ideas around usability and features.

Why work with us?

  • Daily progress meetings with the whole team
  • Home working
  • Flexi-time
  • Unlike all too many other agencies, you really would work 9 – 5.30 (excluding lunch of course, and flexi-time)…. after that you’re encouraged to go home and have a life, and not be sat at your desk until 7pm. You are NOT given a works phone, your personal mobile number doesn’t get given to clients, and you are not expected to check your work email outside of office hours.
  • Healthy snacks in the work place
  • Good coffee
  • Non-corporate studio offices inc. pool table
  • A Fitbit or contribution towards gym membership for full time members of the team after probationary period – a healthy body = a healthy mind!
  • 28 days paid holiday a year, with unlimited unpaid holiday after that where possible. Additional paid holiday after 5 years of working with us.
  • Paid time off for your kids’ sports day and Christmas play
  • Every day’s a school day but we like to encourage professional development
  • Encouragement / support to speak at web events if that’s something you fancy doing
  • Encouraged contribution to – and a stake in – inhouse tech start up projects, whether they’re existing or new suggestions by you

Salary will be dependent on skills and experience; we’re happy to hear from experienced developers, and newbies who still meet the criteria above. Please contact us with your CV and some examples of your work.
